Artificial, intelligent and highly topical (06.03.)

ITB Berlin Convention turns the spotlight on one of the year’s most fascinating technological subjects – Live demonstration of service robot “Pepper” – Discussions about the opportunities offered by chatbots and virtual assistants and their impact on the international travel industry

Artificial intelligence in all its facets: several of the sessions at this year’s ITB Berlin Convention will be devoted to “Artificial Intelligence“ and its use in the travel industry. Chatbots, virtual assistants and humanoid robots are already making the customer’s life easier in all kinds of areas from travel bookings to hotel check-ins, but they also present the industry with new challenges. At this major think tank for the international travel industry experts with a wealth of practical experience will be passing on their knowledge from 8 to 11 March 2017 and will be giving visitors valuable and entertaining insights into the world of artificial intelligence.

In his keynote speech at the ITB Future Day on 8 March on the subject of “Technology vs. Humanity? Artificial intelligence and the prospects it offers for business, society and humankind“, Prof. Dr. Hans Uszkoreit, Scientific Director and Head of the Faculty of Language Technology at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), will explain the extent to which artificial intelligence will change business structures, social processes and our private lives. The current capabilities of robots will be demonstrated live on the stage on the same day by the robot Pepper during the ITB Destination Day 1. Nicolas Boudot, EMEA Sales Director, SoftBank Robotics Europe, will report in more detail about the many promising applications for service robots at destinations, and areas where they can be particularly effectively deployed.

Artificial intelligence is also pointing the way in the hotel sector. At the ITB Hospitality Day on 9 March the chairman, Dr. Andriew Lim, Professor of Technopreneurship and Innovation in Hospitality, Hotelschool The Hague, will pose the question: “Is the hotel sector welcoming digitalisation, with all its innovations in automation, the internet of things and artificial intelligence?“. The question is: what ideas and interfaces will provide hotels with new kinds of freedom and satisfaction. Taking part in the discussion will be Sarah Kennedy Ellis, Vice President Global Marketing & Portfolio Strategy Sabre, Andreas Pröfrock, Director Strategic Alliances and Technology Partnerships WW Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise International, Frippe Stenberg, Vice President Brand and Guest Journey Scandic Hotels, and Rohan Thakkar, Vice President Development & Strategy YOTEL.

Participants in the session entitled “The Next Big Thing: artificial intelligence – disruption to travel decisions and bookings?” at the ITB Marketing and Distribution Day on 10 March will learn how artificial intelligence can be effectively applied in tourism. Technology giants are making massive investments in research into artificial intelligence and its applications. A presentation by Norm Rose, President, Senior Technology and Corporate Market Analyst, Travel Tech Consulting Phocuswright Inc., will explain the status quo. In a subsequent interview with Philip C. Wolf, founder of PhocusWright and Serial Board Director, they will investigate future directions. This will be followed by a panel discussion during which the two of them will be talking to Thomas Houriez, Co-Founder & Vice President Marketing Sépage S.A.S, David Low, Developer Advocate Skyscanner, and David O’Flanagan, CEO Boxever, about previous experience with chatbots and big data analyses.

In his kick-off paper on “Artificial intelligence and virtual reality: Megatrends in a dynamic technological environment“ and a subsequent discussion with Brekke Fletcher, Travel Executive Editor CNN, Mark McSpadden, Director of Technology Sabre Labs, will show how man-machine interfaces and digital reality will alter travel in the future. Technological research institutes like Sabre Labs are investigating innovative technological trends and their impact on travel behaviour in the next decade.

Digital IPAs (intelligent personal assistants) are now an increasingly common feature in dealings with guests. On the eTravel Stage on 8 March the paper by Stefan Niemeyer, Senior Conversion Architect neusta etourism GmbH, will explain how learning robots, Amazon Echo or Google Home are altering the travel experience, and the changes to which tourism marketing will have to adapt. On the same day a special event will tell visitors all they need to know about “Chatbots, artificial intelligence and machine learning in interaction with customers“. In a discussion chaired by Timothy J O’Neil-Dunne, Co-Founder Expedia, Tnooz, T2impact, Airblackbox; Managing Partner VaultPAD Ventures: Global, the massive potential offered by digital assistants will be investigated by Matthias Keller, Chief Scientist Kayak, David Low, Developer Advocate Skyscanner, and Mike Slone, Chief Experience Officer Travelaer SAS.

Also on the Wednesday at ITB, at the eTravel Lab Day, Tymon Wiedemair, co-founder and Chief Executive of Ulmon GmbH, will explain how artificial intelligence can be used to personalise travel content on mobile devices. This has been made possible by the introduction on a mass scale of “mobile“ technologies in recent years, as well as by the creation of powerful artificial intelligence systems that make use of localised data in order to supply travellers with personalised content.

The paper at the ITB Young Professionals Day on 8 March will illustrate how digitalisation in the tourism sector has also altered the requirements imposed on newcomers to the industry. Prof. Armin Brysch, International Relations Coordinator, Faculty of Tourism, Hochschule Kempten, Head of the Vocational Training Committee of the DRV, and Michael Faber, consultant and Chief Executive Tourism, Tourismuszukunft, will explain the sort of technological skills that today’s graduates must have, and will use actual examples such as VR glasses and artificial intelligence to show what technology in tourism can now offer.

Focus on sustainable and responsible tourism at ITB Berlin

Adventure Travel & Responsible Tourism is an expanding sector – 12th Pow-Wow for trade visitors with topical subjects and exemplary projects on all aspects of astro-tourism, adventure holidays and ecological travel – Hall 4.1b fully booked

Responsible travel and the designation by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) of the “International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development “ are the main themes at the world’s largest travel trade fair. The importance of this vigorously expanding market is reflected by the fact that Hall 4.1b, the venue for Adventure Travel & Responsible Tourism, is fully booked for the first time. From 8 to 12 March 2017 nearly 60 exhibitors from 35 countries will be presenting their latest offers and products for adventure and ecological travel, and for economically and socially responsible tourism.

The 12th Pow-Wow for Tourism Professionals, from 8 to 10 March 2017, is the meeting place for visitors, exhibitors, business partners and sponsors. This year’s slogan for this unique symposium is “Gazing into the night skies’ sparkling diamonds − A journey through the vast universe”. During the papers, panel discussions, workshops and networking events more international tourism executives and experts than ever before, including those from the Caucasus, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Kenya, Spain and Iran, will be explaining and debating controversial issues concerning responsible tourism, climate change, sustainability, geoparks, wildlife and astro-tourism.

David Ruetz, Director of ITB Berlin: “There is an increasing awareness in society about the need for a more responsible approach. Nowadays most people realise that this form of travel is a conscious recreational experience. Because of the internet and their own personal research, travellers are significantly better informed than they were just a few years ago. As long ago as 2004 an extensive platform for the sectors of adventure holidays and eco-tourism was being made available at ITB Berlin. In this way we want to support companies in their efforts to design tourism products and services that are economically, socially and ecologically responsible.“

Astro-tourism as a magnet for tourists

The 12th Pow-Wow is being opened by this year’s partner country Botswana with a cultural attraction that offers a foretaste of the show by the #ilovebotswana ensemble. On the first day the main theme is that of astro-tourism. Botswana is one of those destinations with natural, clear night skies that are free of any light pollution. Trade visitors will be shown the importance of heavenly bodies for life on earth. Experts will explain the challenges facing the international travel industry as it seeks to implement astro-tourism in a sustainable and responsible way, and the impact on eco-systems of the increasing light pollution caused by artificial light. As an example, Dr. Andreas Hänel, an astronomer and the director of the planetarium at Museum am Schölerberg, Osnabrück, will present a paper entitled “The many facets of astro-tourism“, pointing out that 60 per cent of Europeans and 80 per cent of North Americans can no longer see the Milky Way.

In his keynote speech Harald Bardenhagen, astronomer and director of the Eifel National Dark Sky Park, will explain the importance of darkness for human health and biodiversity. He will also be presenting a workshop on astro-photography, with details about the right equipment for observing stars and planets. Tim F. Horn, director of the Zeiss Planetarium in Berlin, will conduct visitors on a tour of the universe. This interactive presentation will offer live simulations of natural phenomena such as solar eclipses. The Astro-Tourism Day will end with a discussion by experts entitled ”Challenges and benefits of astronomy and dark nights for sustainable development“ and the ”One-Minute Pitch Networking Cocktail“, which is sponsored by Mexico. In addition, the Minister of Tourism of Mexico, Lourdes Berho, will give a welcome speech and a short lecture.

Focus on human rights

The second day of the Pow-Wow is also devoted to socially compatible tourism. Here exhibitors and experts will be explaining how others can learn from the experience of those who are already engaged in sustainable tourism. One example is provided by Slovenia. The Convention & Culture Partner of ITB Berlin 2017 is one of the few countries that has set itself the aim of becoming comprehensively "green". The discussion entitled “Slovenia makes you green!“ will feature five tourism specialists from Slovenia who will be presenting the programme ”Slovenia Green“.

A highly topical issue for many years, to which ITB Berlin has always made its own contribution in the form of numerous initiatives, concerns human rights and the protection of children. Rika Jean-Francois, the CSR official of ITB Berlin and a Board Member of the Code, will be chairing a panel discussion on this subject. The speakers on “Child Protection in Tourism“ will include Dorothy Rozga, Executive Director ECPAT International, and Damien Brosnan, Programme Manager, The Code. Afterwards other tourism companies will officially sign the “Child Protection Code“. This will be followed by a discussion by the Round Table for Human Rights in Tourism, on the thorough implementation of human rights in the hotel industry.

Geoparks and the protection of species as an important legacy for future generations

UNESCO geoparks make a valuable contribution to the sustainable development of regions with geological sites and landscapes of international geoscientific importance. Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Zouros, President UNESCO European Geoparks Network, will be presenting new projects and significant activities in this field. Activity holidays are a rapidly expanding sector all over the world, and form the subject of the subsequent group of topics, under the heading of “Culture, Biodiversity and AdventureTourism“. Experts from Mexico, India, the Balkans, Russia and the Caucasus will be discussing various aspects, including: How can tourism experts develop sustainable adventure travel?

Using the “Race for Rhinos“ as an example, the ITB partner country will be documenting successful projects for the protection of species. Jillian Blackbeard, Executive Marketing Manager Botswana Tourism Organisation and Secretary Tlhokomela Botswana, Endangered Wildlife Trust, will be reporting on the largest rhinoceros relocation programme in southern Africa, and will be showing how the country’s tourism sector benefits from the continued survival of these animals, which are under threat of extinction.

A boom in bicycle tourism and wildlife watching

The “Responsible Tourism Clinics“, on Friday, 10 March 2017, offer participants an opportunity to engage in direct discussions with experienced specialists from the field of sustainable tourism. In the panel discussion on “Developing successful cycle tourism products“ Ádám Boder, EuroVelo and Advocacy Director European Cyclists’ Federation, Kevin Kalfels, Press and Marketing Officer Romantischer Rhein, and Carolien Ruebens, Project Officer European Cyclists’ Federation, will explain how and why cycle tourism has developed from a niche product to a booming sector. The other sessions will deal with “Certification for Sustainable Tourism“, using the TourCert in the Danube region as an example, and ”Community-based Tourism” as demonstrated by Kayah State (Myanmar), Sierra Gorda de Querétaro (Mexico) and Gems of Kenya.

During the afternoon of the final day of the Pow-Wow the focus will shift to "Wildlife Watching Tourism”. Following a keynote speech by Anja Domnick, Project Officer UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage, there will be a master class seminar entitled ”Make bird watching fit for tourism“. Afterwards Elmar Mai, a biologist and journalist, and Fabian Ritter, biologist and scientific advisor to Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), will speak about the green paradise and whale watching in the Dominican Republic. There will then be papers on pristine Mongolia and the presentation of a new tourism model for Macedonia, as well as the initiative “Following the footprints of wildcats“ by the Selva Bananito Lodge and Reserve in Costa Rica. To conclude the day the Blue Yonder Responsible Tourism Clinic will be explaining about ways of communicating and marketing sustainability, before this year’s Pow-Wow closes with the 9th ITB Responsible Tourism Networking Event, giving everyone an opportunity to briefly pitch their own views and ideas.

Digital innovations and analogue encounters

At the ITB Berlin Convention numerous sessions on digitalisation and travel technology will take a look at the future – Live testing of innovation, career tips for technically minded newcomers and how to deal with fake news in a crisis – Exclusive market survey by Travelzoo/ ITB Berlin on travellers’ safety concerns

From 8 to 11 March 2017 the ITB Berlin Convention will host a number of discussion rounds with information updates on digitalisation. Internationally recognised technology experts and experienced practicians will be testing innovations live and providing information on the latest advances in travel technology as well as the opportunities and risks. Admission to the ITB Berlin Convention is free for trade visitors.

On Wednesday, 8 March 2017 the ITB Future Day will be putting Google’s innovations to the test. In a one-on-one interview with Philip C. Wolf, the founder of Phocuswright and Serial Board director, Dr. Oliver Heckmann, vice president of Engineering, Shopping and Travel Google Inc., will provide an insight into the strategies of the search engine giant and their specific uses for the global tourism industry. Visitors can witness how the key topics being discussed are clearly explained via live smartphone demonstrations.

News about terrorist attacks spread particularly fast via social media channels. The Travelzoo/ ITB Berlin study involved global consumer research across nine countries via independent research agency Norstat. The findings reveal the scale of travellers’ concerns in the world’s main tourism source markets and what kind of information they regard as helpful. At the ITB Future Day Richard Singer, president of Travelzoo Europe, will have valuable tips on how to handle travellers’ fears. One of the findings of this market survey is that for 97 per cent of the interviewees around the world the question of how safe a destination is plays an important role. Despite this, for the majority of those polled it has not dampened their desire to travel. This year only four per cent of Britons and six per cent of Germans and French said they would not travel abroad for safety reasons.

On Thursday, 9 March 2017, at the ITB Hospitality Day, the following will be discussing 'Metasearch & Co.: The Invisible Battle for the Guest'. Marius Donhauser, proprietor of the hotel Der Salzburger Hof and founder of hotelkit, Tobias Ragge, CEO of HRS, and Johannes Thomas, managing director of Trivago, will debate how online platforms affect hotel managers’ internet ratings. The event will be moderated by Carolin Brauer, managing director of Quality Reservations.

On 9 March 2017, in a lecture at the ITB Destination Days, Percy von Lipinski, an award-winning travel guru with CNN, will examine the role of social media channels such as YouTube in crisis situations. Tourists’ reactions to a threatening situation are significantly determined by perception and communication processes. If used in a sensible way, social media can dispel fears and throw light on events. Percy von Lipinski will also explore the role of fake news. Afterwards, in an interview with Philip C. Wolf, Gillian Tans, president and CEO of Booking.com, will provide an insight into her career and how she became a senior female executive in the international travel industry. She will also explain ways in which Booking.com can drive forward destination marketing.

On 10 March 2017, the ITB Marketing and Distribution Day will kick off with another keynote interview of a leading figure. Johan Svanstrom, president of Hotels.com and Expedia Affiliate Network Brands, will talk to Philip C. Wolf about the strategies and organisational structures of the company that recently bought HomeAway, Travelocity and Orbitz.

The digital transformation of the tourism industry also offers huge career prospects for newcomers, providing they possess technological expertise. On 8 March 2017, participants in the ITB Young Professionals Day can find out about the basic qualifications necessary and where young people in higher education can obtain them. By taking a look at things such as drones, VR goggles and artificial intelligence, for example, Michael Faber, adviser and managing director of Tourism with Tourismuszukunft, and Prof. Armin Brysch, coordinator of International Relations at the Faculty of Tourism, Hochschule Kempten and head of the DRV Career Studies Committee, will explain how technology can impact on tourism. Afterwards an overview will be provided of new job descriptions as well as details of tourism courses.

Grand finale of ITB Berlin 2017

Exotic music, colours and rhythms will feature at the grand finale of the World’s Largest Travel Trade Show® – admission is free for ITB ticket holders on Sunday

On 12 March 2017, along with world cultures and amid a festive atmosphere, visitors, exhibitors and guests will gather to celebrate the finale of the 51st ITB Berlin. A spectacular show full of colour, African music, Caribbean songs, Andalusian rhythms and German-Greek choir music will bring world cultures together on one stage. The event will be hosted by the award-winning television and show presenter Mary Amiri.

Botswana, the partner country of ITB Berlin, will be taking visitors on a fascinating musical tour. Botswana can boast more than its cultural heritage. The ’best kept secret in southern Africa’, as this country is called, is equally well known for its wildlife and hospitality. One of the high points will be the dance performances: the 15-member dance ensemble #ilovebotswana will enthral visitors with a 45-minute dance and music show directed by Andrew Kola of the Mophato Dance Theatre.

The merengue reflects the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic. A UNESCO addition to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List, this dance and the country’s typical music mirror Caribbean people’s nature and their hospitality unlike any other cultural aspect. Dancers and musicians will be laying bare ’Andalusia’s soul’ with an impassioned and fiery flamenco performance. Traditional Greek singing offers a similarly stirring experience. Polyphonia, a German-Greek choir directed by Dr. Ursula Vryzaki, will be performing songs on stage in the Palais am Funkturm.

The Delphic Games: a global stage for art and cultures

Since 2010, in cooperation with the International Delphic Council (IDC), a global cultural organisation, ITB Berlin has been organising the ITB Grand Finale. By taking charge of the Delphic Games the IDC Berlin has breathed new life into the sister event of the Olympics. Their defining symbol is water, just as fire stands for the Olympic Games. In ancient Greece the Delphic Games were held for almost 1,000 years, always in the year preceding the Olympic Games. Since 1997 the Delphic Youth Games and Delphic Games regularly take place every four years at different venues around the world. In 2016 Goa in India played host to the 5th Delphic Youth Games.

The grand finale of ITB Berlin will take place on 12 March in the Palais am Funkturm from 3.30 to 5 p.m. Admission is included in a Sunday ticket to the fair. For more information: www.itb-berlin.de/de/Besucher/Privatbesucher/DasITBFinale/.
